OCR: ARTISTS DREAM OF MARS H.G. WELLS @ CINEMA & MUSIC In 1953, Byron Haskin adapted H.G. Wells's novel "War of the Worlds" for the silver screen. In Haskin's film a Martian spacecraft lands near a small California town. Everyone who approaches is wiped out by a deadly heat ray. The Martians are green and slimy, with a single eye in another the middle of their forehead, and suckers on the end of their fingers. As in Wells's novel, these horrid creatures finally succumb to terrestrial germs. In 1955, Rudolph Mate filmed "The Conquest of Mars." Unfortunately, the ambitious plan to conquer Mars was hindered by a mysterious saboteur who damaged the rocket launching pad. This madman brandishes the Bible and says God created man on Earth because He meant for humanity to remain here. His opponents argue that even if Earth is mankind's divine cradle, nothing in the Bible prevents us from traveling to other planets. MARS BEI
